After attending Yale College, where he was a Religious Studies major and teaching assistant, he went to Harvard Law School for his J.D. degree. Upon his admission to the New York State Bar, Joe began his work in the premium beverages industry.

Having developed wine and spirits products in Bordeaux (France), Mendoza (Argentina), New South Wales (Australia), Piedmont (Italy), Priorat (Spain), Puglia (Italy), Tuscany (Italy), and Veneto (Italy), Joseph was named a Commandeur de L’Ordre du Bontemps de Medoc et de Graves, upon his 1999 induction in Bordeaux.
With a passion for ultra-premium spirits, he founded Chatham Imports, the parent company of Michter’s Distillery (www.michtersdistillery.com). In addition to resurrecting the historic Michter’s whiskey brand, Joseph has launched brands like Crop Organic Vodka (U.S.), Farmer’s Botanical Organic Gin (U.S.), Baojing (People’s Republic of China), Faretti Biscotti Liqueur (Italy), Marti Autentico Rums (West Indies), and Foro Amaro (Italy).
Over the years he has done considerable not-for-profit volunteering and participated in philanthropic endeavors with Yale College, Harvard Law School, Columbia University, The Fresh Air Fund, Collegiate School, The Jericho Project, and Walden Woods Foundation.
Joseph has particular interests in fund-raising to provide financial aid for worthy students, supporting American military veterans, and contributing to his almae maters. Currently, Joseph serves on the board of The Fresh Air Fund, the Center for Strategic & International Studies NYC Roundtable, and Harvard Law School Dean’s Advisory Council.
